Result of Dualmass Flywheel Failure

Dual mass flywheel damper springs are designed to isolate the torsional frequency match between the  engine and the transmission.

The DMF damper springs and nylon retainer failures can usually be attributed to the engine not running correctly because of Bad injectors/worn rings, etc. This leads to changes in the resonant frequencies of the engine.

These changes can cause the torsional frequency match between the engine and the DMF to fall within the operating range of the engine, causing the torsional damper springs to work continually, resulting in premature failure of the flywheel/ clutch cover assembly and Clutch Disc.

DMF Centre Bearing failure can be caused by incorrect installation with not aligning the Cover assembly with the DMF Dowel Pins.

The Pilot bearing is normally a caged needle roller bearing and failure of this can often be caused by a worn input shaft  or if the vehicle load or towing capacity is exceeded. DMF Flywheels have only 8-12 degrees of free rotational movement - if this is exceeded the DMF will slip and must be replaced.
